The Khai Islands (often spelled Koh Khai) are a cluster of three small, highly picturesque islands nestled in the Phang Nga Bay, just a 15 to 30-minute speedboat ride east of Phuket. Known for their shallow, turquoise waters and remarkably bold marine life, these islands are a favorite for families, casual snorkelers, and anyone looking for a quick, quintessential tropical escape.

The trio is made up of three distinct islets:

  1. Koh Khai Nai

This is the largest and most popular island of the three. It features a beautiful, crescent-shaped white sand beach lined with colourful beach umbrellas, small wooden beach bars, and sun loungers.

  • The Highlight: The water here is incredibly shallow and clear. You don’t even need to swim to see the fish—hundreds of striped sergeant major fish swim right up to the shoreline, swirling around your ankles in knee-deep water.
  1. Koh Khai Nok

Very similar in vibe to Khai Nai, Koh Khai Nok is a tiny, egg-shaped island surrounded by a pristine coral reef.

  • The Landscape: It features a striking rock formation on one side and a sandy beach that wraps around the island. It’s highly developed for tourism, offering plenty of spots to grab a refreshing coconut, snacks, or rent snorkelling gear.
  1. Koh Khai Nui

Unlike its sisters, Koh Khai Nui is the smallest islet and does not have a walkable sandy beach or facilities.

  • The Highlight: Because it lacks a beach for boats to crowd around, it serves as the premier snorkelling stop of the tour. Boats will anchor just off the coast, allowing visitors to jump straight into deeper waters to explore the healthiest coral reefs and diverse marine life of the three islands.

Why People Love the Khai Islands

  • Perfect for Beginners & Kids: Because the fish gather right at the shoreline in shallow water, it is widely considered the best island tour in Phuket for families with young children or non-swimmers who still want to experience snorkelling.
  • Short Travel Time: Unlike the Phi Phi or Similan Islands, which require longer, sometimes bumpy boat rides, the Khai Islands are incredibly close to Phuket’s eastern piers (like Asia Marina or Boat Lagoon), making it a quick and easy trip.
  • Flexible Half-Day Tours: Because of their proximity, you don’t have to dedicate a full day to them. Morning or afternoon half-day tours are incredibly popular, leaving the rest of your day open.
